STI Testing Before An Abortion… Serving Metro Atlanta in Georgia including Brookhaven, Crabapple, Cumming, Dunwoody, Duluth, Peachtree Corners, Suwanee, Sugar Hill, Berkeley Lake, Norcross, and more!
Did you know that sexually transmitted infections can spread during an abortion procedure?
If you are sexually active and/or considering abortion, here are several medical recommendations for you to consider:
- It is medically recommended by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) to be tested for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea prior to a medical or surgical abortion to reduce the risk of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID). During an abortion procedure cells infected with Chlamydia or Gonorrhea can travel from the vaginal opening up into the uterus. When the cells travel and are not treated, there is at greater risk for developing a secondary infection called Pelvic Inflammatory Disease. https://www.cdc.gov/std/pid/stdfact-pid.htm
- In addition, it is medically recommended by the CDC for sexually active individuals to be tested annually, and prior to engaging in sexual activity with a new partner. https://www.cdc.gov/std/prevention/screeningreccs.htm
- The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologist (ACOG) recommends that women receive Rh factor testing and Hemoglobin/Hematocrit testing prior to a medical or surgical abortion. https://www.acog.org/Clinical-Guidance-and-Publications/Practice-Bulletins/Committee-on-Practice-Bulletins-Gynecology/Medical-Management-of-First-Trimester-Abortion.
