Telling your parents that you’re pregnant can be very overwhelming, especially if they don’t know you’re having sex. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to ensure the smoothest conversation possible. Consider these tips:

Put Your Feelings into Words

Think through how you’re feeling about your pregnancy before having the conversation. Knowing how you feel will help you put your feelings into words. When you’re talking to them about your pregnancy, tell them how you feel – nervous, scared, anxious, happy, or excited. It’s okay to have a mix of emotions! You can include how you feel when you share the news with them, like:

“I’m really nervous to tell you both that I’m pregnant.”

“Mom and dad, I’m really overwhelmed with the fact that I’m pregnant.”

“Even though I’m really anxious about what this news brings, I’m happy to be pregnant.”

Giving your parents a look into how you’re feeling before you share the news can help them navigate their response.

Give Them Time to Process

After you share the news with them, give them time to process and talk about how they feel. They might need to step away for a few minutes to think before continuing the conversation, and that’s okay! Taking time to respond is an act of maturity. Don’t feel discouraged if they don’t respond right away. Listen to what they have to say and be honest with how you feel, as well.
